Christmas

Many celebrate different things during this time of the year; there are different traditions, some are against the celebration of Christmas while others enjoy this time of the year because of the gift exchange.

Although Christ was not really born in December, nor on December 25. Since I can remember we commemorate the birth of Christ during this time of the year.

As some of you know, my parents were Catholic Missionaries in Puerto Maldonado, for Christmas we used to receive a basket with paneton and other goodies to celebrate Christmas. I also remember going to a dinner where there was a lot of yummy food, I remember long tables with people talking and smiling.

My parents will make my sisters and I take a nap. We will wake up around 7 pm to get ready for a special night.

In Peru, I remember waiting until midnight to say Merry Christmas to one another. We will wear nice clothing, read the Bible, pray, enjoy a nice dinner, to then wait for midnight.

My dad will read the Bible and pray. My mom always made a point to make our table look extra nice to welcome Christmas.

Once midnight arrived, it was time to open presents!

We had three gifts (my ungreatful heart was not neccesarily happy about one of them), the first gift was a book for the upcoming school year, some kind of stationary item, and a piece of clothing.

After we opened gifts it was time to enjoy some of the snacks my mom placed nicely on the table (Cheetos, Chips, soda, etc.). At home we will only drink soda and have snacks for special ocassions. We were allowed to go outside to light some sparks. I remember seeing the fireworks… we were allowed to be awake until 2 am or 3 am sometimes.

I dont remember when was our last Christmas as Peña Pinado, perhaps was when I was 15 or maybe 16, after that my mom traveled abroad, I traveled abroad, we left the nest to then create our own traditions.

Recuerdos de Navidad

Muchos celebran diferentes cosas durante este tiempo del año, en los Estados Unidos hay diferentes tradiciones. Algunos están en contra de celebrar la navidad, otros disfrutan de los intercambios de regalos.

Aunque Cristo no nació un 25 de Diciembre, desde que recuerdo en casa usamos este tiempo del año para conmemorar el nacimiento de Cristo.

Como algunos de ustedes saben, mis padres fueron Misioneros Católicos en Puerto Maldonado, para Navidad solíamos recibir una canasta con paneton y otras golosinas para celebrar la Navidad. Recuerdo que íbamos a cenar a casa de los Misioneros, la cena era deliciosa, recuerdo mesas largas con gente comiendo, hablando y sonriendo.

Mis padres hacían que mis hermanas y yo tomemos una siesta. Nos despertaban alrededor de las 7 pm para prepararnos para una noche especial.

En Perú, recuerdo haber esperado hasta la medianoche para decirnos Feliz Navidad. Nos poníamos la ropa más bonita, leeríamos la Biblia, oraríamos, para luego disfrutar de una agradable cena, y así esperar a la medianoche.

Mi papá era el encargado de leer la Biblia y orar. Mi mamá hacía que nuestra mesa se viera más agradable y linda que cualquier otro día para dar la bienvenida a la Navidad.

Una vez que llegaba la medianoche, luego de los saludos y abrazos ¡llegó el momento de abrir los regalos!

Recibíamos tres regalos (mi corazón desagradecido no estaba necesariamente feliz con uno de ellos), el primer regalo; un libro para el próximo año escolar, el segundo regalo; algún tipo de artículo de papelería y el tercer regalo; alguna prenda de vestir.

Después de que abrimos los regalos llegó el momento de disfrutar de los bocadillos que mi mamá colocó en la mesa (Chizitos, tico tico, papitas, gaseosa, etc.). En casa solo bebíamos gaseosas y piqueos en ocasiones especiales. Ese día nos daban permiso de salir a la calle para encender algunas chispitas mariposas. Recuerdo haber visto fuegos artificiales … nos permitían estar despiertas hasta las 2 am, a veces hasta las 3 am.

No recuerdo cuándo fue nuestra última Navidad como Peña Pinado, quizás fue cuando tenía 15 o quizás 16, después de eso mi mamá viajó al extranjero, yo viajé al extranjero y cada uno creamos nuestras tradiciones.
